Udupi: India’s next census will be conducted fully in digital format for the first time, and a self-enumeration option will also be available, said Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swarupa T. K..
Speaking at a preparatory meeting for the 2027 Census held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, she said the first phase will involve house listing work for 30 days starting April 16. The second phase, which includes population enumeration, will begin in February 2027.
She instructed officials to appoint the required officers and staff for the census work as per government guidelines. A mobile application and a central portal will be used for house listing, data collection, verification, and monitoring.
Officials were also directed to finalise trainers, conduct training for district census officers, recruit field workers, and prepare the final list of personnel. GPS-based mapping must be completed, and all necessary steps should be carried out within the scheduled timeline. She added that all departments must work in coordination for the smooth conduct of the census.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Abeed Gadyal, Zilla Panchayat Planning Director Uday Kumar Shetty, Assistant Commissioner Rashmi, Municipal Commissioner Mahantesh Hangaragi and other officials were present.

Free HPV vaccination drive for 14-year-old girls to start in Udupi district
Manipal: To prevent cervical cancer among women, the government will provide free HPV vaccines to girls who have completed 14 years of age under the national HPV vaccination campaign at all health centres, said Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swarupa T. K..
Chairing the HPV vaccination programme task force committee meeting at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, she said the district has set a target to vaccinate 11,274 girls with a single dose. The vaccination will be voluntary and will require consent from parents or guardians.
The vaccines will be administered for three months at all Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, Taluk hospitals and Mother and Child hospitals across the district.
Campaign inauguration on March 13
Member of Parliament Kota Srinivas Poojary said the campaign will be launched on March 13 at the Udupi Board School, where the first vaccines will be given to students. He noted that the vaccine is about 93% effective and stressed the need to create awareness about it.
Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary S. S. Kadrolli, District Health and Family Welfare Officer Basavaraj G. Hubballi, District Surgeon Dr. Ashok, RCH Officer Jyothsna B. K. and other officials were present.
